DIY Tutorial for Gable Roof Buildings in Modular Buildings Tileset Pack
The Gable Roof variant of Modular Buildings Tileset Pack has a complete, yet daunting amount of tileset pieces. But don't worry, this guide will help you build your own buildings!
Just like in real life, you build buildings from bottom to top.
Hence, in modular buildings set, tileset are always divided into 3 categories:
A. Wall section
B. Roof section
C. Details
The gable roof is probably the most used roof style in the world, real life or RPG. Here is how you build each section for the gable style buildings.
A. Wall Section
In the gable-roofed tileset series, wall sections has four parts.
- Ground wall. This is the lowest section of your buildings. It has shadow for more intuitive tilemapping.
- Upper level wall. This is the wall designed for second level.
- Wall-to-wall connection. This is the connection between two walls of different level.
- Wall-to-roof connection. This is the connection between walls and roof. The top-most piece you should give to your wall. Available as those tiles with 1 px enlarged part (see illustration).
There is also special wall-roof combination called through-roof walls.
Through-roof walls is the upper level wall where it goes through the roof, either directly or as balcony.
For the balcony, you need to connect it to 4th part (wall-to-roof connection) before you can connect it to more higher part.
For the through-roof, you will need to put lower roof section prior to connecting it with the lower wall.
For Gable Roof style buildings, minimum combination must have 3rd or 4th parts as the uppermost level.
Mix and match, you will have a basic functional wall.
B. Roof section
The gable roof section has 3 parts.
- Main Roof. There are two roof orientation in Gable series: frontview and sideview. Recommended size for building with frontview roof are 5 tile-width. Main Roof has "attachment" part, where you can use partial roof section to "attach" it to a bigger part.
- Connectors. You can mix and match between main roof style using connectors. This tileset is the key to make non linear buildings.
- Dormers. Attached directly to the main roof, dormer are fully optional. Dormer orientation are available as frontview and sideview. Recommended size for building with frontview are 5 tile-width.
This is the usage example:
Mix and match with the previously built walls, you will have a basic buildings without details.
C. Details
Details often requires 1-2 layers above the wall section, depending on building complexity. User with different tilemapping software will experience different level of difficulty when putting details, e.g. RPG Maker MZ and XP user will find it easier to put details than people with MV. This is why understanding how details are put is important. Details in the gable roof series includes:
1. Door.
Door ALWAYS has three tiles. There are two placements available: corner or centered. Combination between corner and centered tiles will determine door position on the wall section. If you use door tiles, you HAVE TO delete the corresponding wall first to avoid double-shadow problem. If you are using RPG Maker, do NOT pile the door over the wall tile or you will mess up with other details.
2. Windows.
Windows has two modes: half-tile and full-tile, depending on how the image fill the tile. Always use the half-tile whenever you can because it will looks more natural against the door and wall corner segment. Please see the difference between two modes in the picture below:
3. Shop front.
Shop front has two parts: the canopy and the item box. You can have independent canopy without item box, but to use item box part you will always use canopy. You need a minimum 2-tile high wall to put a complete shop section.
4. Chimneys.
There are full tiles and half tiles chimneys. Adjust with roof sloping whenever you place one.
There, using this guide alone and with little practice, you can do building styles like this:
